Is the Brexit vote going to turn us off language learning even more?

In Britain we are far behind our European neighbours when it comes to learning a foreign language. During my time living overseas it always astounded me that almost everyone I met could communicate in English with fluidity. The same, unfortunately cannot be said for the majority of people in Britain and speaking another language.

The take up of GCSEs in Modern Foreign languages has diminished over the years and I am concerned that the Brexit vote is going to push us backwards further and discourage children even more from learning another language.

I welcome the introduction of languages at KS2 and the promotion of SMSC in schools. Is this enough, though for children to foster a life long love of languages? I certainly hope so…
